Papadoble – Montpellier
Papadoble, the office! Yes, this unassuming place was my evening watering spot so much that I referred to it as “The office”. You’d walk right by if you hadn’t been warned how good it is. But don’t skip it, don’t pass it up, and please don’t forget to try when you visit the cozy town of Montpellier, in the South of France. Owners Julien Escot and Julien Lopez have created one of the finest mixologist bars in France. They are also very gracious host, making my stay in Montpellier a memorable one. Papadoble has even garnering an award, for the best cocktail in France, displayed proudly on the walls. This bar is underground, no really, I mean underground as in a old bunker or cave, complete with curved ceilings. The Icons of John Hemingway “Papa” himself adorn the place. In Cuba, Hemingway nic-named his favorite double Daqari the “Papa Doble”. Personally, my favorite drink or drinks rather were the La Louisianne (Their own take on a Sazerac) and the Cucumber (A citrus blend with fresh Cucumber and Pisco). Both fantastic drinks as are the selection of tapas. Julien always had the freshest ingredients and bottles and they took this serious. As serious as a master sushi chef takes his craft. It was as much a pleasure to watch your drink being handcrafted and measured as it was to taste it.
