Robert Glasper – Pianist
Like witnessing Coletrane live or Miles Davis in the rare Blue Note sessions when they were at their greatest, Robert Glasper is the new, new Jazz heavy. Genius is in his fingers, Robert plays effortless and has managed to do something to Jazz that has been attempted but not achieved until now. He has modernized Jazz, and the Jazz Trio, and brought it to the forefront, without throwing away its roots and legacy. Hip-hop, not cRap music is fully evident and pumping though Roberts spine. The Young Black intelligentsia has finally something to hold on to. A pure American art form, Jazz the way it began, from the classically trained roots, through the soul of Gospel and Blues, and the Passion of Soul and Funk and back to the future. It’s so, so, so refreshing to see and hear this being done. Robert’s trio in concert is relaxed, not overly tangent-ed and flowing. To me it’s the epitome of modern music. ROBERT GLASPER
