Vernon’s Hidden Valley Steakhouse

Shhhh, now I don’t want to wind up with my legs broken but I have to let you in on a little secret.  This nondescript door beneath the red light is not what it appears to be.  It’s not a whorehouse either.  No my friends, for my entire Albuquerque visit, this would be the most memorable meal I had in a month long stay.  Not only was the meal memorable so was the live jazz, and fantastic wine list.  The place is called Vernon’s Hidden Valley Steakhouse and believe me it is hidden.  Hidden right out in the open that is. Even the cab drivers didn’t know where it was.   And not only that, you are only granted entrance with the right password. Yes, a password.  I know, I know it seems cheesy but I repeat it will be worth it.  The slot in the vault like iron door slides open and a Tuff guy asks “Who is it?  Wha’dya want?”  What’s the password?  Once inside the small shake down room, you are read the rules of the house and, threatened with broken limbs if you step out of line.  I know, I know, it seems silly, kitschy, insulting even, but you’ll have to get past that.   Once inside the venetian plastered walls you will find one of the most attentive wait staff and well stocked bars in town.  Vernon’s offers their own “Wet aged” beef, with all the traditional NY steak house sauces, buerre blanc, au poivre, diane as well as the accompaniments, truffled potatoes, baked, creamed corn, creamed spinach, etc.  So to reiterate, the next time you are in Albuquerque or just passing through, make sure to call ahead, get the right password and go to Vernon’s for a truly enjoyable and memorable dining experience, sans red or green chile.  VERNON’S HIDDEN VALLEY STEAKHOUSE 505-341-0831 6855 4th Street NW, Los Ranchos, New Mexico
