Layer Cake – Primitivo “aka” Zinfandel

This “Layer Cake” Primitivo wine is my new favorite, everyday wine. Fairly inexpensive red wine, this Primitivo is made from 100 year old vines.  Coming directly from Puglia, Italy (The Heel of the boot).  Primitivo is actually the father of  the wine we know as Zinfandel. Harvested in mid-September and grown in the Manduria soils, a red iron-rich clay with large calcareous rocks and ancient coral formations, which produce stress on the vines resulting in an intense flavor.  The wine itself is fantastic, warm and rich, black cherry, blackberry, truffle, tar, chocolate.  The perfect red wine for braised meats, roasts, steaks, chops or just salami and cheeses.  Priced at around 10 to 15 dollars it is well worth it and don’t be fooled by the twist top as I was.
